The Road to Self Improvement (dealing with stress)

 Sea with Girl

Wouldn’t you love to live a happy, optimistic and resilient life? How wonderful that would be! Not to mention how beneficial it could be for your health. Happiness is the antidote for the stresses of life. Stress is linked to top causes of stroke, heart disease, cancer and eventually death.

Today we will look at dealing with stress. If you can learn to avoid it, it can change your total outlook. Do you remember the hit single ‘Don’t Worry, Be Happy’ by Bobby McFerrin? This song has a very unique way of delivering its message of being happy .

Many people might argue that he is just being arrogant when he refers to such things as rent being late and not worrying, not having a bed to lay your head etc, but there is some sense behind what he said……just think for a moment …..Ask yourself what benefits have you received by worrying about a particular circumstance.

You may begin to feel the tension in your body, you start being forgetful, you shout at the kids, ill treat your husband or wife among others. Certainly you gained nothing by worrying….you go to sleep and the next morning instead of one problem, you now have two…the original problem plus the effects of the stress.

The most re-assuring phrase that a person should remember is – “The only thing in life that will always remain the same is change“, and as long as we have life, there is hope. we have the power to make the necessary changes  if we so desire. Even if we are faced a difficult situation we can always find solace in the knowledge that it too would change.

Relationships and Social networks are essential to happiness. We must realize that people are different, accept people for who or what they are, avoid constant arguments, mini war tactics, clashes, and let go of all kinds of resentments……don’t hold people in mind because it will harm you more than the other person. If arguments seem unavoidable still try and make an effort to understand the situation …..put yourself in the other person shoes, you’ll probably see the situation different and eventually learn to cope with each other. This is a very effective method when dealing with stress.

Believe it or not, happiness is actually found in everyone, the question is….how do we increasing it to make life more wonderful and also more healthy?

A Happy Girl

Being happy is relatively easy; all that is required is for you to decide to be a happy person. …..you are what you think! Abraham Lincoln observed that most people for the majority of the time can decide how happy or stressed, how relaxed or perplexed, how bright or dim a person want their outlook to be. With that being said, choose to be happy.

There are many ways by which you can Attain Happiness:

  •  Being grateful is a wonderful attitude. There is so much to be thankful for. Thank the cab driver for taking you home safely, thank the cook for preparing such a wonderful meal and thank the guy who cuts your lawn. Also thank the mailman when he brings your mails, thank the guy who open a door when your hands are full with luggage and thank God for being alive.

  •  Gossip is stressful. Try to get less of it. Some people just can’t start their day without putting their nose where it don’t belong. Think about it, 99% of the “news” we hear about is bad news. Starting the day with gossip just doesn’t seem too much sense.

  • Find a religious connection. Being part of a religious group with its dancing, bible teaching, singing, prayers and meditations gives you that inner peace.

  •  Be a good Manager of your time. Time is invaluable and too precious to waste. Time management can be described as a list of rules with proper scheduling, planning, setting and attaining goals, creating lists of things to do giving priority where necessary.

  •  ’Laughter is the best medicine’. Check out the humor websites and share the jokes with a friend which in turn causes them to share jokes with you.

  • Be expressive……let your feelings show, be affectionate, show your friendship and passion to people around you. They will most likely do the same. Try not to become frustrated, Rome wasn’t built in a day.

  • Learning is a joyful experience. Learn as much as you can everyday. Learning helps us expand and broaden our horizons. Knowledge could also present us with a lot more opportunities to attain happiness in the future.

  •  Walk, Run, jog…..whatever you could find to get in shape or stay in shape. Do the things that your body was made for. Feel alive.

  • Avoid the loud music especially the music with negative lyrics . The constant pounding of the noise is not good for your heart or your brain.
